Akdeniz defeats Malaga in the second day of the female competition

Cologne hammers Aksaray, Oslo and Radboud Nijmegen ended in a tie, and Aveiro manages to beat Ovidius

The second day of the 9th European Universities Handball Championship gave very different results in the female competition. The University of Oslo and the Radboud University Nijmegen ended in what was the first tie of the Championship. Both teams competed fiercely and, although it is not a result that either of them likes, it does reflect the balance in abilities and potential and the difficulty they both encountered when trying to secure a spot in the crucial phase of the competition. This result pushes Valencia and Primorska to seek points from tomorrow on.

The team from Cologne, after its resting day, started its participation in Group B thrashing Aksaray (38-26) in a match that started having a close scoreboard that lasted until the Turkish team’s efforts faded. The physical strength of the German team prevailed thanks to quick counterattacks and powerful throws from up to 9 meters. Sabinha Gundogdu had some trouble scoring due to an individual defense, and her teammates tried to substitute her when it came to scoring. The errors started in the Turkish team when they tried to come back, something their rival took advantage of.

Later at the CTA, Aveiro and Ovidius offered a hectic match. The scoreboard was low and without any significant differences. During the second half, the Portuguese team gave its best with an extraordinary Mariana Lopes (10 goals). On the other side of the court, Blanca Caldare proved to have superb throwing skills (8 goals). Finally, the Aveiro team prevailed over the Romanian team with a final score of 22-21.

Finally, the host team was not able to build up on their previous victory at Argüelles. Akdeniz showed up with a hard game, forcing the Malaga team to continuously face an uphill battle. The ottoman team's victory over Ovidius by a solitary goal on Monday helped them face this crucial game with great composure, and enabled them to show their full offensive potential. The University of Malaga tried to equalize the score by taking risks in all aspects of the game, but struggled to get good feelings and ran out of answers to their opponent's effectiveness (26-28).
