EUSA, an institution that connects European universities through sport

The European Universities Handball Championship 2017 is getting closer and we would like to tell you a little bit about the European University Sports Association (EUSA).

EUSA was founded in November 1999 in Vienna, Austria. It is a non-governmental and non-profit organization, working in the field of university sport in Europe. It links national university sport federations, universities, teams, individual competitors, volunteers and other partners in 45 countries throughout Europe. In 2001, the first European Universities Championships were organized and the sports were basketball and volleyball.

This organization promotes values of a sound mind in a sound body encouraging young people, especially university students aged 17-30, to actively involve both academic level as well as being active in sports; without any discrimination on the basis of gender, race, religion, political and other grounds.

Its mission is to maintain and develop regular communication between the national federations, European universities and students; to co-ordinate competitions, conferences, mass-sport-events and other activities both at university and national level; to represent university sport in general and the member federations in particular in relation to European organizations, and to disseminate throughout Europe the ideals of university sport in close collaboration with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and other European organizations.

EUSA is the coordinator of the European Universities Championships and the European Universities Games. Each year, over 3000 participants take part in its sporting events. Apart from the sports program and activities, EUSA also supports and encourages educational activities in the field of student sport. To support the development of University Sport in Europe, EUSA also participates in different programs and projects.

For this year, there are nineteen European Universities Championships being organized, covering sports that range from table tennis to rowing, sport climbing, taekwondo… You name it. As you know, the Handball Championship will be held in Antequera, Malaga. And we are sure that it will be a great success just as previous editions!
