Put your tracksuit on and play sports throughout Malaga!

This weekend Malaga is holding its 5th Sports Festival, whose aim is to allow all citizens, including those who practice sport regularly and those who do it occasionally, to enjoy as many sport modalities as possible during these three days. As a sport-committed city, Malaga holds this festival to promote healthy habits and advertise the very varied sport offer the municipality offers.

This year’s slogan is “Put your tracksuit on!”, and the festival will be held on May 26-28 with an open atmosphere and the goal of reaching as many people as possible. For the first time in the history of this event, the sport activities will not be limited only to the Athletics Stadium and the José María Martín Carpena Sports Arena as usual, but instead will be held in more than 50 places around the city—beaches, streets and traditional and not so traditional sports venues to bring sport to everyone in Malaga.

There is an activity to suit all tastes and age groups, since, as the Councillor for Sport Elisa Pérez de Siles pointed out, the 5th Sports Festival is very varied and gathers more than 100 activities: sports shows, competitive events, masterclasses, hiking trails, and more. The list of sports modalities include the popular sports such as football, futsal, basketball, surf or badminton, but there is also room for other less well-known ones. This way, participants will have the chance to try tchoukball, kubb, roundnet, aquagym or even sport modalities that were invented in Malaga, like the baloncodo (literally, “elbowball”, a team sport where participants hit a fitness ball with their elbows), and there will also be the Espeto Beach Running race, a night race along the beach with the typical Malaga “espetos” (sardine skewers) waiting at the finish line.

Our key sport, handball, will also be covered on Saturday at the Pedregalejo beach, in a children’s beach-handball modality, where the youngest participants will show their aiming skills.

It is thanks to this kind of events that the city of Malaga has been awarded the designation of European Capital of Sport 2020.
